Max Landis Writing Chronicle 2

Fox wants more super-powered teensIt's a good week for the creative team involved in found footage superhero saga Chronicle. Yesterday, rumours began to break that director Josh Trank was being targeted by Sony to take on its planned Venom spin-off. We pondered whether writer Max Landis might add scripting duties on that film to his busy work plate, but he's just scored something else that will keep him off the streets for a while: he'll write the Chronicle sequel. The film, which saw three teens played by Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan getting telekinetic powers from a strange glowing substance, has earned $105 million worldwide after just 33 days in cinemas. Not bad for a movie that cost around $12 million to produce. Naturally Fox is looking to go to that well again and we'd say hiring the man who wrote the script seems like a smart move.Be forewarned: we're about to get into SPOILERS here for anyone who hasn't seen the first movie. Nothing has been said about what the sequel might, er, chronicle (sorry, but it had to be done), though the first film ends with Jordan's Steve dead, DeHaan's Andrew seemingly joining him in the afterlife and Russell's Matt travelling the world on a search for a little meaning after the tragic events. Could the new story move away from the found footage style? We'll have to wait and see. As for a director, we're not sure Trank will be back, but he might just feel protective of his shared baby.As we mentioned above, it's not as if Landis has been sitting around tweeting every few minutes (even if it feels like he has, sometimes) since completing work on the first film. He's got several scripts at various stages bubbling away in development, including one of the many Frankenstein projects and Pied Piper at Fox, mercenary comedy Good Time Gang and adventure thriller Amnesty, which has Ron Howard attached.

NBC to add third hour to 'The Voice'

NBC is raising the volume on "The Voice." The Peacock is adding a third hour to its hit unscripted series Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning April 3. In addition, the existing two-hour edition will start airing live on April 2. "Voice" will air its final episode of the season in a two-hour Tuesday episode on May 8. That will serve as a promotional platform for "America's Got Talent," which will begin its seventh season earlier than usual with a pair of two-hour episodes on May 14 and 15. Adding "Voice" on Tuesday should also help provide a lift for NBC's new unscripted series "Fashion Star," which will get a lead-in from the second night of "Voice." "Star" premieres on March 13. Expanding "Voice" to three hours a week will help spread the strength of NBC's reigning powerhouse amid a schedule that is struggling just about everywhere else. The additional hour of "Voice" will be devoted to live elimination rounds. It's a strategy not unlike the one employed by other unscripted hits including ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," which will now see all three of its hours go up directly against "Voice" in the same time slots. Blunting "Stars" with more "Voice" could also help keep ABC in fourth place among the broadcast networks in the 18-49 demo race. The Alphabet is currently trailing NBC largely because of the massive ratings injection the Peacock got from its Super Bowl telecast last month. Academy awards Available Together With Other Publish-Oscar Talk: Hammond

Since all people Academy Award nominees who didn’t win on Sunday evening have observed an entire day to lick their wounds, there's very good news: In the event you hurry you're going to get in on today’s record purchase (by Nate D. Sanders Monthly Auctions) and get an Oscar statuette. See, the situation is already trying to find.Clearly, the Academy totally frowns relating to this Oscar fire purchase nonetheless they can’t do just about anything relating to this since the honours available on the market are pre-1950 — the yearthe Academy changed the recommendations and forged contracts with individuals who win they (or their estates) must first offer tosell the Oscar to Academy for $1 before utilizing it industry. Intoday’s choice of gold males — which instantly doubles the quantity of Oscars ever offered round the free market — you'll find some pretty historicallysignificant honours. They add a screenwriting Oscar won by Herman Mankiewicz for co-writing Citizen Kane (its only win in 1941 the matching Orson Welles ScreenplayOscar fetched $861,000 in December) and greatest Picture Oscars for your last century Fox films How Eco-friendly Was My Valley (1941) and Cavalcade (1933), the 2nd the initial Best Pic Oscar for your studio. Additionally, there are director Norman Taurog’s Oscar for 1931′s Skippy, they won at 32, which makes them still the youngest to win inside the category. You may want to purchase the first-ever Effects Academy Award for 1938′sSpawn In The North or possibly a Black and WhiteCinematography award for your 1939 classic Wuthering Levels together with one one for1948′s The Yearling. The Most Effective Years Of Our Livesor the Film Editing prize for a similar movie. Art Company company directors might similar to this year’s losing composers should consider purchasing Hugo Friedhofer’s 1946 Scoring from the Dramatic Picture Oscar for Paul Groesse’s Color Art Direction award for 1949′s Little Women.Stars can select between 1947′sA Double Existence Best Actor Oscar for Ronald Colman or (probably less pricey)Charles Coburn’s 1943 Supporting Actor statuette for your More The Greater, a title that describes the spirit from the lot of Oscars available on the market. The auction finishes at 5 PM (PT) today, there is however extended investing in an offer beginning at 5:15. Meanwhile, in news about people nobody got their Oscars the standard way and won Sunday evening, Meryl Streep may not be capable of sell her collection but she could practically start a museum with people three Oscars and record 17 nomination certificates. I still don’t get why lots of media reviews call her TheIron Lady win an unpredicted. Although Viola Davishadbeen victorious over Meryl within the Experts Choice and SAG honours, Meryl beat her within the Globes and BAFTA. It absolutely was an amount match and very a toss-up — not just a large Oscar surprise. Meryl’s self-deprecatingandcharming acceptance speech will be a show highlight: “When they referred to as my title I'd this sort of feeling I really could hear half of the usa going, ‘Oh no, her? Again?’ But, whatever!” The simple truth is for those who have 17 nominations, most likely probably the most connected having a actor, you must have at leastthreewins because time.As she ongoing to place her pals inside the audience, old and new,it introduced in your thoughts an excellent Oscarspeech written by the incredibly gracious Ingrid Bergman upon winning herthird Oscar in 1975 for Murder Round The Orient Express.“It’s always nice to acquire an Oscar”, she mentioned, before mentioning it has to have attended fellow nominee Valentina Cortese for Day For Evening. “Here I am. I am her rival and don’t appreciate it whatsoever. Please forgive me, Valentina. I didn’t mean to.” Streep is now offering only one other record to chase: Katharine Hepburn’s total of four acting wins, whilst she mentioned in their speech, “I know I will not be up here again”. Time will state relating to this. Despite the fact that it might be a properly-marketed 29 years between Oscars for Streep, she didn’t beat Hepburn’s record on that since the great Kate required to wait 34 years between her first Oscar for Morning Gloryin 1934 andher secondfor Guess Who’s Going to Dinnerin 1968. Not everyone was thrilled with Streep’s speech. A formerMargaret Thatcher aide, Master Norman Tebbit, was furious she never oncementioned the person she carried out inside the film, adding to talk about in a few quarters within England over obtaining a u . s . states play their country’s famous former Pm. Within the well-attended GREAT British Film Reception on Friday within the Consul General’s L.A.residenceto recognition British Oscar nominees, Uk Culture Secretary Jeremy Search amusingly told everybody else, “Isn’t it great that people legendary Americansuperheroes, Batman, Superman and Spider-Guy are nowall beingplayed by British stars — payback to get a u . s . states play our Margaret Thatcher”. Incidentally, Streep’s win incorporated within this season’s results was ideal for the legally embattled Golden Globes, which finally came back just like a strong precursor for your Oscars, wonderful four acting individuals who win Sunday winning Globes first. So toodid The Artist to find the best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Music Score and Woodsy Allen to find the best Script. Although everyone stood a severe Oscar-weekend hangover, I am toldbig champion Harvey Weinstein had been praising Monday evening getting a unique dinner for his staff, honours consultants while others who brought for the triumphantcause of Oscar’s most devoted campaigner. Individuals who win from Best Documentary Undefeatedand The Artist(including Best Director Michel Hazanavicius, who had just result from a Jay Leno tape) have there been telling tales in the extended, hard season that began for many of them nine several days earlier in Cannes and contains now finally produced Oscar. Finally, using the recenttalk in the advanced ages of many Academy people, it's interesting to see seniors can cheertwo records broken this year that put somewhat dent in the notion that Hollywood is completely ageist. As remains broadly noted, 82-year-oldChristopher Plummer increased being the first actor or actress to win an Oscar (which he required to beat another 82-year-old, Max von Sydow, to make it happen). Woodsy Allen, at 76, is just about the earliest person to ever win a Script Oscar, eclipsing a year ago’s recordachieved by TheKing’s Speechwriter David Seidler, who was simply only 73 because he put it. Therefore I guess it absolutely was appropiatealso in the yearthat also includedthe first quiet film to win Best Picture in 84 years that entertainment within the Academy’s Governors Ball was provided by 85-year-old Tony Bennett, who appeared fantastic. That was an ironic choice also because Bennett’s only acting role in the movie reaches the 1966 kitsch classicThe Oscar.

Paul Walker inks first-look deal with Universal

WalkerJoining his "Fast Five" co-star, Paul Walker has inked a two-year first-look production pact with Universal Pictures to house his Laguna Ridge Pictures. The first project under this agreement is the action thriller "Skyscraper," based on an original idea by Mike Sobel. Walker will executive produce and star, with Neil Moritz's Original Films producing. "I've had a long and successful relationship with Universal so it's the obvious and ideal home for Laguna Ridge Pictures. I'm excited to expand my relationship with them and with Neal, who has been a catalyst and a guide throughout my career. Having the support of Jim Berkus, Theresa Peters and Chris Hart at UTA, along with my manager Matt Luber and my producing partner Brandon Birtell, now is the time to take this next step," said Walker. Laguna Ridge Pictures is run by Walker, Brandon Birtell and manager Matt Luber. "Fast Five," the most recent installment in the "Fast & the Furious" franchise, grossed more than $630 million at the worldwide B.O. and the next installment goes into production this spring. "It is impossible that the Fast and Furious franchise would have become the phenomenon that it has without Paul's imprint on the series," said Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman, Donna Langley in a joint statement. "We're excited to be the beneficiaries of his creative work as he branches out as a filmmaker and tackles projects as a producer." The deal marks a unique move by the studio who has now locked up its four top pieces of creative talent from the franchise to similar deals with helmer Justin Lin and writer Chris Morgan also receiving similar deals since the pic bowed last April. In a time where studios seem to be cutting back on their on-lot-deals, Universal seems to being the opposite not only signing the "Fast Five" group to deals but also bringing on Jason Blum and his Blum House pictures to the lot as well reupping Imagine Entertainment's deal. Since "Fast Five" bowed, Walker has latched on to two Peter Safran produced indies, "Vehicle 19" and "Hours," and sources say he has wanted to get more hands on with his projects for some time. Walker is currently filming "Hours" and will jump into filming "Fast Six" this May. He is repped by UTA and Luber Roklin. Contact Justin Kroll at justin.kroll@variety.com

Amazing Spider-Guy Clip Online

Peter Parker refused access! The marketing campaign for that Amazing Spider-Guy has become under way, with the huge, multi-country footage screening and various trailers, photos and posters online. The first full clip has showed up, and it is filled with all you might expect in the adventures of Peter Parker. Have a look below.Everything, obviously, presuming you anticipate him to look within the lanky type of Andrew Garfield being hassled in the door to Gwen Stacey's building by an officious Noo Yawk doorman (performed by John Scurti, that has usually been found engaging in trouble alongside fellow Amazing Spider-Guy actor Denis Leary on TV's Save Me).Yes, if you are wishing for explosions, web-slinging, roaring lizard monsters or even the lovely Emma Stone as Gwen, you are best looking at a clip again. Still, it is a good indication from the humour which will tell you the film. This footage first popped on the film's viral site, that has been encouraging graffiti artists (okay, it is simply a stunt) and promises more treats in the future. Hopefully which will include more tantalising footage. And when you need to begin to see the whole film in a single sitting, you will need to hold back until This summer 4. The day we declare our independence! From... the inability to begin to see the Amazing Spider-Guy in movie theaters. So that's nice.

Serbian-Born Actor Jelena Stupljanin Finds Theater Home in New York

Jelena Stupljanin (pronounced Elena Stup-Yanin) is in a good humor. The award-winning Serbian-born actor, who has lived in NY City for the last six years and is a happy member of the Rising Phoenix Repertory since 2010, has a leading role in the award-winning film "Cirkus Columbia." Directed by Bosnian Oscar winner Danis Tanovic ("No Man's Land," 2001) and slated for release Feb. 17 and March 9 in N.Y. and L.A. respectively, the movie earned Stupljanin the best actress award from the Alexandria Film Festival. At the time of the interview, she was about to leave for the Berlin Film Festival to pick up the award, which she wasn't able to receive earlier "because of the Arab Spring revolution that was preventing us from being in Egypt," she recalls in excellent English, but with a marked accent. Set in 1991, following the fall of the Communist regime in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the film tells the story of Divko (Miki Manojlovi?) who returns to his former home after a 20-year exile in Germany. He has grown successful and brings with him lots of cash, a flashy car, and a much younger mistress (Stupljanin). It is a brutal homecoming as they encounter his estranged wife and son. Confrontations erupt as new conflicts emerge and festering old wounds surface. These private torments mirror the unraveling society at large as the Bosnian War grows imminent. The film is in Bosnian with English subtitles.Stupljanin explains that Serbian, her native language, is basically the same as Bosnian, though there are differences in dialect, accent, and idiosyncratic expressions. Somewhat more challenging than language was getting an emotional handle on the pre-war world of the film. "I was eleven when the war started," she says. "Yugoslavia does not have nostalgia for me. The '90s were horrible. Crazy things were happening that I never want to be part of. Hanging out with these actors of that generation made me feel nostalgic for that earlier period."The young actor has come a long way since she graduated from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. Interestingly, in that region of the world, you cannot be employed as an actor unless you attend the State Theater School and gaining admission is fiercely competitive she says. Graduating from the school is equally rigorous; the drop-out and push-out rate is very high. After graduating, the goal for most students is to be accepted into one of the established theaters, which may take a number of years."You don't have to be brilliant, but once you are accepted, the chances are you will be employed for the rest of your life," Stupljanin notes. "Actors are taken seriously and theaters are publically supported. Ten actors were in my graduating class. Four were accepted into major theater companies, three free-lanced with several theaters, and the remaining three left the profession." Capitalism has made its presence felt. Today, some theaters are co-funded by government and private sources and a handful of smaller, more experimental theaters are privately controlled as is the film industry.Stupljanin became a permanent member of one of the leading Serbian companies, Atelje 212, here she participated in a wide range of productionsfrom Shakespeare to Beckett to Neil Labute to works by several modern Eastern European authors. Plays are often selected or dramatized to heighten politically resonant themes. "Politics plays a much larger component in theater there than it does here," she comments. "Our experience with the war and our shaky economy are all entangled with our daily lives."Despite a successful career in Belgrade's TV, film, and theater scene, Stupljanin wanted to study at the Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in NY. With the financial support of Serbian Princess Elizabeth Karageorgevic, who was familiar with her work, Stupljanin got a shot at it and she's been having a grand time ever since.Unlike some European actors who find alien the grand ambitions and career strategizing typical of American performers, Stupljanin believes those differences emerge from individual temperaments as opposed to regional psychologies. Admittedly, she has found actors very much on her wave length with the Rising Phoenix Repertory, an organization she likens to the kind of theater companies she was part of in Belgrade. "It's my theater family in NY. It's an amazing group of collaborating artists that you know will create something that works."For Stupljanin having a theater to call home is an artistic pinnacle for now and in the future. Chloe Sevigny On For Lovelace

But Demi Moore's out...Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman have been cranking the cameras on buzzed-about biopic Lovelace since late December. Now they're dealing with a couple of changes to the cast, as Demi Moore has dropped out and Chloe Sevigny has climbed aboard.Amanda Seyfried is starring as Linda Lovelace (formerly Linda Boreman), who leapt to infamy when she was plucked from obscurity by Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard). He cast her in legendary porn pic Deep Throat, and for a while she seemed to be an unlikely superstar. But Linda's life was filled with trouble and strife, and she went on to write a caustic memoir about her time, before becoming an anti-porn campaigner. As we reported earlier this month, Moore was cast as MS Magazine founder Gloria Steinem, who wrote articles about Lovelace's life. But now she's dropped out citing personal issues and exhaustion.Sevigny is playing a feminist journalist writing a freelance assignment for a men's magazine, who is tasked with finding out about the real Linda. While it's not a direct swap, it does make us wonder if Epstein and Friedman have decided to forgo putting Steinem in the film. She joins a cast that also includes Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, Bobby Carnavale, Sharon Stone, Chris Noth, Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, Romeo Brown, Robert Patrick, Eric Roberts and one James Franco, who is popping in to make a cameo as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
