Miramax expands app

"Spy Kids" Miramax launched its Miramax eXperience app on Facebook for Qatar, UAE and Egypt at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday. Some 15 million Facebook users will be able to rent films, watch Miramax clips and play with various social media features integrated into the app, which is similar to one available in the U.S., Blighty and Turkey. The first six titles available are all three pics from the "Spy Kids" franchise, "Shall We Dance?" and "Good Will Hunting," with more titles from Miramax's library expected to be available soon. Rentals cost 30 Facebook credits, are available for 30 days and expire 48 hours after viewing has commenced. The app is available on iPads and Google TV televisions. Marking his first visit to Qatar, Miramax CEO Michael Lang said he was "blown away by the energy and potential" of the region. "The announcement is about how important we at Miramax view the region to be -- not only for our company interests, but for film and media businesses of the future," he said. "It's tough not to get incredibly optimistic about this part of the world." Miramax first began streaming titles via its Facebook app in the U.S. in August.
